![]() ![]() The games weaknesses include a battle system that can sometimes feel a bit clunky, and the fact that there are so many playable characters means that, while they are all fun and quirky, they all feel pretty disposable and not that important to the story, aside from Serge, Kid, Harle, and Lynx. The story, art, and music are where this game shines. The world is lush and vibrant, the characters are unique and interesting, the story is quite good, and the music is absolutely delicious. Now, that said, it's still an amazing game, and I highly recommend it. So while it is technically a sequel, it really works better as a standalone game. There are some clues, Easter eggs, and hints scattered throughout, especially toward the end, but the main story is basically about Serge, and Kid, and that loose plot hole from Trigger. If you're going into this expecting to follow up with any of the story or characters from Trigger, I daresay you'll be a bit disappointed. As for the fate of Trigger's protagonists (warning: massive spoilers), we also learn that the protagonists from Trigger were killed off screen before the events of Cross. ![]() ![]() The characters and events of Trigger are not really referenced until very late in the game, and the story pivots to reveal that the entire point of Cross is to tie up a loose plot hole from Trigger, namely the fate of Schala. There are themes of life and death and rebirth throughout. It follows a new protagonist and cast through new areas, and instead of traipsing through time, you end up traipsing through two parallel universes that are nearly, but not quite, identical. But also kind of not really, at least not in the traditional sense.Ĭross takes place in the same world as Trigger, set (10 or 20) years later. It is worth it to play Chrono Cross, absolutely. ![]()
