![]() ![]() ![]() Our family group consisted of 1 snorkeler, 1 open water diver, and 2 advanced divers. Mahalo to Troy, Sean, and Nick for a fantastic experience! We did a two tank scuba & snorkeling manta ray excursion. There is something a little freaky about jumping into the black ocean water miles from shore, but there's no one I would trust more than KOA to allow me to make this leap, and all my apprehension was quickly overtaken by how incredible this dive was. My children and I were babbling like fools all the way home about how cool it was and how we can't wait to do it again. Every second there was something fascinating to watch. It was like living in the Monterey Bay Aquarium Depths exhibits. The variety of cool sea creatures with their electricity-like illumination and pulsing was something I never thought I would see in the ocean. 3 miles offshore, with 2 miles of ocean beneath you, and only the light from your flashlight to provide visibility: you feel like you are floating in space (but you are safely tethered to the boat and not too deep). The most amazing thing about our trip though - and possibly the coolest thing I have ever done - was the pelagic blackwater dive. I could go on and on about those dives, but the other reviews give a good sense- wonderful crew, valet service, tasty food, amusing stories. With three diving days spread over two weeks, we had an incredible time with KOA and Captain Danny! Our day dives were incredible (sharks, garden eels, shrimp, flounder, frog fish. ![]() Great crew, good boat, great group size, just do it. And then the Manta Ray dive/snorkel experiences are as great as you expect. Spinner Dolphins doing spinner dolphin things is great. Big credit to the crew to both observe the rules about boats near dolphins (not all operators did!) and not trying to downplay how neat the encounter was. We ended up with a temporary stop on the way to the manta spot when a large pod of spinner dolphins decided to show up. We added more passengers for the second (manta) stop, but the boat wasn't crowded not crew less attentive. Free swimming eels doing battle with parrotfish - simple dive had it all. The diving was easy and great - vis was far, but Ryan had a knack for spotting things emerging from deep water (eagle ray, sandbar shark) earlier so that her identifying gestures looked like summonings. The first stop was just us and three person crew - I dove with Ryan while my buddy snorkeled with Connor. We did the afternoon two-stop trip as an excellent compromise, and Kona Ocean Adventures delivered. I'm a serious diver my travel buddy doesn't dive. ![]()
